Currently we have many applicants for the health professions scholarship but not ONE from a patient of our practice. Please email or mail your application this week!

Atkinson Family Practice Scholarship (For a current patient of the practice)

Must be current patient of the practice and enrolled for the coming year in any college program full time. Submit one or two paragraphs explaining what your plans are for the coming year and how a scholarship would be helpful. Based on need and can reapply annually through the office. Deadline is April 1^st.

Meet Rebecca Ametrano, M.S. Psychology Intern

Rebecca is a doctoral candidate in the Clinical Psychology Program at UMass Amherst. She earned her B.A. in Psychology with honors from the University of Michigan in 2007
Subsequently, Rebecca worked for two years as a Clinical Research Coordinator at the Massachusetts General Hospital Bipolar Clinic and Research Program where she managed psychiatric treatment studies and was active in mental health outreach programs. Her graduate research focuses on the process and outcome of psychotherapy.

Somatics Movement Class

Saturday, May 4^th, 2013
2 – 4 pm

This class will introduce Somatics basics, and will include some of the foundational exercises for addressing pain, injury, and inflexibility in the back and core — along with key exercises for obtaining the benefits of Somatics throughout your entire body.

What is Somatics?

Somatics is powerful movement retraining for everyone.
Through the use of slow, easy movements,
Somatics teaches your nervous system
to release chronically contracted muscles,
giving you freedom from pain, greater flexibility,
and an increase in overall good health.

For a senior girl – must be enrolled for the coming academic year in a four-year college with an interest in pursing a healthcare profession. Submit one or two short paragraphs explaining why you are interested in health care professionally. Not based on need. Chosen by Atkinson Family Practice staff with student name blocked out. Do not mention if you are a patient of the practice. Renewable if student remains full-time and in good standing in their college.

Meet Maija S. Cheung our new Medical Student

I am a third year medical student at Dartmouth (Geisel) Medical School in Hanover, New Hampshire but Amherst and Dr. Kate’s practice are pretty much “home” for me. Although I have been back and forth between NH and MA for the past few years, my official residence is in Amherst with my husband, Brian Hamm, head baseball coach at Amherst College.

I received my BA in 2005 from Middlebury College where I majored in geography (political geography of the Middle-East), minored in religion, and completed studies in Arabic. After graduating, I lived and studied in Amman, Jordan and then worked in Washington, D.C. for an international human rights law firm until I decided to pursue medicine. I completed a post-bac program at the University of Massachusetts, worked as a harm reduction counselor in Northampton, and was a clinical/office assistant at Dr. Kate’s old office!

Since going to medical school at Dartmouth, I have been involved in many global health projects. I spent three months in Peru working on a medical boat on the Amazon, in a busy ER in Lima, and delivering babies in the central jungle. I also helped organize disaster relief programs in Haiti after the 2011 earthquake. Recently I have also been doing research in oncology surgery and post-op wound infections and keeping very busy with all of the work that medical school entails.
